Working in Queenstown
The local conditions that change how we work.
Sealing limestone in Queenstown isn't optional if you want the stone to last. Unsealed Ōamaru stone in a freeze-thaw climate can lose visible surface detail in 10-15 years; sealed Ōamaru stone holds its appearance for decades. The key is using a breathable penetrating sealer — never a film-forming product that traps internal moisture and accelerates exactly the damage you're trying to prevent.
Whether it's a residential job, a commercial site or a heritage building, we adapt our method to the surface, the exposure and the season. Our team is on the ground in Queenstown Lakes weekly, call-outs to Queenstown are part of the normal schedule, not a special trip.

Queenstown FAQs
Common local questions.
Will sealing change the look of my Ōamaru stone?
Our Water Repel sealer is invisible on application. The stone retains its natural matte appearance and colour. The difference shows only in performance — water beads off the surface, biological growth slows, and weathering is dramatically reduced.
How often does Ōamaru stone need to be resealed?
Typically every 7-12 years on most Ōamaru stone applications. We can do a quick water-bead test after a few years to check whether re-coating is due — there's no benefit in sealing earlier than necessary.
Does sealing prevent the green algae that grows on shaded sides?
It significantly slows it. Algae and lichen need moisture to colonise the stone surface. A sealed surface stays drier between rain events, which makes it much less hospitable. Combined with a biocide treatment as part of the cleaning, you should get years before regrowth.
Can you seal Ōamaru stone in winter?
Yes within reason — we need daytime temperatures above 5°C and a few hours without rain for the sealer to bond properly. We work around weather windows from June through August where needed.
