Limestone cleaning · Queenstown & Wanaka

Limestone cleaning, from Ōamaru stone to travertine.

The soft, breathable limestones across Central Otago — Ōamaru stone façades, heritage limestone, limestone paving and patio tile — restored with low-pressure soft wash and pH-balanced chemistry. The wrong cleaning method takes centuries off the stone's life. We do it properly.

The limestone we work with

Every limestone has its own pH tolerance.

  • Ōamaru stone

The soft, breathable limestone that defines so many of Central Otago's heritage and architectural buildings. Highly absorbent, easily marked, and very intolerant of high-pressure water — the wrong cleaning approach can take centuries off the visible life of the stone. We use chemistry chosen specifically for the calcium carbonate matrix.

  • Travertine

Pool surrounds, patios, indoor entryways. Travertine has a fossil texture that grabs dirt and an acid-sensitive surface that won't tolerate standard tile cleaners. Specialist pH-neutral products and soft application — not the same job as cleaning a generic tile.

  • Heritage limestone

Heritage limestone façades on commercial buildings, churches and civic architecture. We've worked on protected heritage sites with QLDC oversight, including restoration where the heritage rules dictate specific products and methods.

  • Limestone paving

Limestone pavers on garden paths and pool surrounds need a gentle clean that lifts organic growth without etching the stone or stripping any existing seal.

  • Bluestone & basalt

Adjacent natural stones that get treated like limestone but have different chemistry tolerances. We test before treating.

  • Indoor limestone floors

Polished or honed limestone interior flooring. Different chemistry again — kitchen oil, food spills, foot traffic, all needing specific lifting agents that won't dull the finish.

How we work

Slow when it matters, fast when it doesn’t.

  • 01

    Substrate identification

Ōamaru stone, French limestone, travertine, bluestone — all called 'limestone' but with very different sensitivities. We confirm what we're working with before choosing chemistry.

  • 02

    Test before treating

A small spot-test confirms the cleaner is appropriate. Limestone reacts unpredictably with acidic products — we never use a method we haven't tested on your stone first.

  • 03

    Low-pressure, pH-balanced

Limestone needs gentle hands. Low-pressure soft wash with pH-neutral or mildly alkaline cleaners chosen for the staining type. No acid washing on the visible face.

  • 04

    Optional sealing

Limestone benefits enormously from a breathable penetrating sealer after cleaning. We can apply our Water Repel formulation in the same visit.
