Working in Wanaka
The local conditions that change how we work.
Wanaka's UV index is among the highest in the country, and the frosts are harder than Queenstown's because we're further from the lake's thermal moderation. Both effects compound on unsealed concrete — UV burns the surface, frost prises it apart. A breathable penetrating sealer addresses both. We don't use film-forming sealers that yellow under Wanaka sun or peel off when the slab moves with temperature.
Whether it's a residential job, a commercial site or a heritage building, we adapt our method to the surface, the exposure and the season. Our team is on the ground in Upper Clutha weekly, call-outs to Wanaka are part of the normal schedule, not a special trip.

Wanaka FAQs
Common local questions.
Do you actually come to Wanaka or is Queenstown your real focus?
Wanaka is a primary service area. We're in the Upper Clutha every week — Wanaka, Hāwea, Albert Town, Cardrona. Travel is built into the quote, no surprise fees for being on this side of the Crown Range.
My Wanaka driveway has white patches showing through after winter — is that the sealer failing?
That's usually efflorescence — salts migrating up through the slab and depositing on the surface. It's a sign the slab is wicking moisture, which a good penetrating sealer can help control. We'd clean the existing efflorescence with our Surface Reviver first, then reseal.
Can you seal Wanaka concrete in winter?
Yes, with caveats. Daytime temperatures need to be above 5°C and rising for the sealer to bond properly. We can usually find a workable window between June and August, but the best results come in autumn and spring.
What's the difference between your sealer and the one you buy at Mitre 10?
Off-the-shelf sealers are often water-based films that look good for a season then yellow, flake or peel — especially under Wanaka UV. Paving Protect is a penetrating treatment we formulate ourselves, designed for this climate. It doesn't film over the surface, doesn't change the colour, and lasts 3-5 years in real conditions.
